Use this checklist to gather all the information you need to evaluate your target role! Make sure you know what questions to ask!
Job research checklist
- What is the job title?
- Is the role part-time, full-time, casual, contract or is it a consulting arrangement?
- Is it permanent or temporary?
- Upward reporting lines. Who does the position report to? What is their title?
- Down reporting lines. Who reports to this position? What are their titles?
- Which department is the position located in?
- Why does the position exist? What are the aims of the position?
- How has the vacancy arisen? Resignation? Is it a new role? Is it to cover someone on maternity leave?
- What are the major responsibilities and how much time is estimated to be spent on each area?
- Are there any language requirements, such as fluency in a second language?
- How much travel is required and how much notice of travel is provided?
- What are the regular hours of work? Does the position pay an overtime allowance? Is the position likely to require you to work extensive amounts of unpaid overtime?
- What is the work environment? Is it office based, site based, is it unusually noisy etc.?
- Does the position have any particular physical demands such as extended periods of standing or sitting, heavy lifting, walking etc.?
- Will the job require or offer access to any sort of confidential information, or access to company funds?
- What technical skills are required (computer programming, bookkeeping etc.)?
- What transferrable skills are sought (negotiation, communication, etc.)?
