Assisting newcomers to prepare for work in Australia

Sue Ellson BBus (Admin Mgmt), Cert IV T&A, AIMM, MAHRI.   Founder and Director, Newcomers Network. www.newcomersnetwork.com.   Convenor, Victoria International Human Resources Management Network, Australian Human Resources Institute.   Consultant, Facilitator, Advisor, Advocate

Sue Ellson was born in Adelaide, South Australia and left a very successful and diverse 11 year banking career to move to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in 1994.  She secured a new role in the recruitment industry within six weeks and was pregnant and unemployed just a few months later.  Sue spent the next five years completing part time study towards a Bachelor of Business in Administrative Management and reading many books about choosing a career. She also completed contract consulting work in the areas of recruitment, employment, training and marketing with various organizations (business, not for profit, corporate and government).

Despite being Australian, fluent in English and very proactive searching for new friends and networks, Sue found the transition to life in Melbourne difficult.  In 1999, she began personal and academic research on the topic of newcomers and launched the online information, events and advocacy social enterprise, Newcomers Network in 2001.  Since then, the business has expanded to Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth, Dublin and London.  An additional worldwide research project was completed in 2004 and Newcomers Network has completed a variety of advocacy work on behalf of newcomers, migrants, Australian expatriates and repatriates ever since.

Sue has published websites (for Newcomers Network and other training companies), several e-books (related to Jobs and Careers, Newcomers, Settlement and Living in Australia) and has had articles published in various forums, blogs, newsletters, newspapers, magazines and professional publications worldwide.  Sue has hosted an enormous variety of events, seminars and workshops as a trainer, facilitator and master of ceremonies and continually participates in innovative projects with multiple stakeholder groups.  She is particularly passionate about helping newcomers make the most of their new life in their new location and shares her ‘six best settlement strategies’ at Living, Working and Networking events held in Melbourne on the Fourth Thursday of every month.
